Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 2. Root system of a split semi-simple Lie algebra

Let (g,h)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) be a split semi-simple Lie algebra, Φ\Phi a non-degenerate invariant symmetric bilinear form on g\mathfrak{g}. For all α∈R\alpha \in R, let XαX_{\alpha} be a non-zero element of gα\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha}. Let (Hi)i∈I(H_i)_{i\in I} be a basis of h\mathfrak{h}, and (Hi′)i∈I(H'_i)_{i\in I} the basis of h\mathfrak{h} such that Φ(Hi,Hj′)=δij\Phi (H_i, H'_j) =\delta_{ij}. The Casimir element associated to Φ\Phi in the enveloping algebra of g\mathfrak{g} (Chap. I, §3, no. 7) is then

∑1Φ(Xα,X−α)XαX−α+∑HiHi′ \sum\frac{1}{\Phi(X_{\alpha}, X_{-\alpha})}X_{\alpha}X_{-\alpha}+\sum H_iH'_i
α∈Ri∈I\alpha \in Ri\in I

Indeed, by Prop. 1,Φ(Hi,Xα)=Φ(Hi′,Xα)=01,\Phi (H_i, X_{\alpha}) =\Phi (H'_i, X_{\alpha}) = 0 for all i∈I,α∈Ri\in I,\alpha \in R, and Φ(1Φ(Xα,X−α)Xα,X−β)=δαβ\Phi (\frac{1}{\Phi(X_{\alpha},X_{-\alpha})}X_{\alpha}, X_{-\beta})=\delta_{\alpha \beta} for all α,β∈R\alpha , \beta \in R.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
