Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 229

Let m\mathfrak{m} be a parabolic subalgebra of a semi-simple Lie algebra a\mathfrak{a}.

a) Let p\mathfrak{p} be a subalgebra of m\mathfrak{m}. Then p\mathfrak{p} is a parabolic subalgebra of a\mathfrak{a} if and only if p\mathfrak{p} contains the radical r\mathfrak{r} of m\mathfrak{m} and p/r\mathfrak{p}/\mathfrak{r} is a parabolic subalgebra of the semi-simple algebra m/r\mathfrak{m}/\mathfrak{r}.

b) If m′\mathfrak{m}' is a parabolic subalgebra of a\mathfrak{a}, every Cartan subalgebra of m∩m′\mathfrak{m}\cap \mathfrak{m}' is a Cartan subalgebra of a\mathfrak{a}. (Reduce to the split case, and apply Prop. 10 to the Borel subalgebras contained in m\mathfrak{m} and m′.\mathfrak{m}'.)
