Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 4. Split semi-simple Lie algebra defined by a reduced root system

Let z∈az\in \mathfrak{a}. Then z∈aμz\in \mathfrak{a}^\mu if and only if [hα,z]=⟨μ,α∨⟩z[h_{\alpha}, z] =\langle \mu, \alpha^{\vee}\rangle z for all α∈B\alpha \in B.

For μ∈Q\mu\in Q, let a(μ)\mathfrak{a}^{(\mu)} be the set of x∈ax\in \mathfrak{a} such that [hα,x]=⟨μ,α∨⟩x[h_{\alpha}, x] =\langle \mu, \alpha^{\vee}\rangle x for all α∈B\alpha \in B. The sum of the a(μ)\mathfrak{a}^{(\mu)} is direct. To prove the lemma, it therefore suffices to show that aμ⊂a(μ)\mathfrak{a}^\mu\subset \mathfrak{a}^{(\mu)}. Let α∈B\alpha \in B. The endomorphism uu of the vector space a\mathfrak{a} such that u∣aμ=⟨μ,α∨⟩.1u|\mathfrak{a}^\mu=\langle \mu, \alpha^{\vee}\rangle .1 is a derivation of a\mathfrak{a} such that ux=ux= (ad hαh_{\alpha}).x.x for x=xβ,x=hβ,x=x−βx=x_{\beta}, x=h_{\beta}, x=x_{-\beta}; hence u=u= ad hαh_{\alpha}, which proves our assertion.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
