Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 232

Let (g,h)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) be a split semi-simple Lie algebra, R the corresponding root system, and B a basis of R. For any α∈B\alpha \in B (resp. for any pair (α,β)∈B2(\alpha , \beta )\in B^2), let R(α)R(\alpha ) (resp. R(α,β)R(\alpha , \beta )) be the closed subset of R formed by the ±α\pm \alpha (resp. the smallest closed subset of R containing ±α\pm \alpha and ±β\pm \beta ). Let g(α)\mathfrak{g}(\alpha ) (resp. g(α,β)\mathfrak{g}(\alpha , \beta )) be the derived algebra of the algebra h+gR(α)\mathfrak{h}+\mathfrak{g}^{R(\alpha)} (resp. h+gR(α,β)\mathfrak{h}+\mathfrak{g}^{R(\alpha ,\beta)}), cf. §3.

a) Show that g(α)=kHα⊕gα⊕g−α\mathfrak{g}(\alpha ) =kH_{\alpha}\oplus \mathfrak{g}^{\alpha}\oplus \mathfrak{g}^{-\alpha}; it is isomorphic to sl(2,k)\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2, k).

b) Show that g(α,β)\mathfrak{g}(\alpha , \beta ) is semi-simple, and that it is generated by g(α)\mathfrak{g}(\alpha ) and g(β)\mathfrak{g}(\beta ). Its root system can be identified with R(α,β)R(\alpha , \beta ).

c) Let s\mathfrak{s} be a Lie algebra (not necessarily finite dimensional). For all α∈B\alpha \in B, let fαf_{\alpha} be a homomorphism from g(α)\mathfrak{g}(\alpha ) to s\mathfrak{s}. Assume that, for any pair (α,β)(\alpha , \beta ), there exists a homomorphism fαβ:g(α,β)→sf_{\alpha \beta}:\mathfrak{g}(\alpha , \beta )\rightarrow \mathfrak{s} that extends both fαf_{\alpha} and fβf_{\beta}. Show that, in that case, there exists a unique homomorphism f:g→sf:\mathfrak{g}\rightarrow \mathfrak{s} that extends the fαf_{\alpha}. (Use Prop. 4 (i).)
