Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 235

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let k‾\overline{k} be an algebraic closure of kk, and g‾=k‾⊗kg\overline{\mathfrak{g}}= \overline{k}\otimes_k\mathfrak{g}. The Galois group Gal(k‾/k\overline{k}/k) operates naturally on g‾\overline{\mathfrak{g}}, on the canonical Cartan subalgebra of g‾\overline{\mathfrak{g}} (no. 3, Remark 2), as well as on its root system R‾\overline{R} and its canonical basis B‾\overline{B}. We thus obtain a continuous homomorphism (i.e. with open kernel)

π:\pi : Gal(k‾/k\overline{k}/k)→\rightarrow Aut( R‾,B‾\overline{R},\overline{B}).

Show that g\mathfrak{g} is splittable if and only if the following two conditions are satisfied:

(i) The homomorphism π\pi is trivial.

(ii) g\mathfrak{g} has a Borel subalgebra b\mathfrak{b}.

(Show that a Cartan subalgebra h\mathfrak{h} contained in b\mathfrak{b} is splitting if and only if π\pi is trivial.)
