Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 8. Symmetric invariants

We retain the notations of Prop. 4, and denote by p\mathfrak{p} the ideal of S(a∗)\mathbf{S}(\mathfrak{a}^*) generated by the homogeneous elements of I of degree ≥1\geq 1. Let x∈ax\in \mathfrak{a}. Then xx is nilpotent if and only if f(x)=0f(x) = 0 for all x∈p.3x\in \mathfrak{p}.^3

Extending the base field if necessary, we can assume that a=g\mathfrak{a}=\mathfrak{g} is splittable. Assume that xx is nilpotent. For any finite dimensional linear representation ρ\rho of g\mathfrak{g}, and any integer n≥1n\geq 1, we have Tr(ρ(x)n\rho (x)^n) =0= 0, so f(x)=0f(x) = 0 for all homogeneous f∈I(g∗)f\in I(\mathfrak{g}^*) of degree ≥1\geq 1 (Th. 1 (ii)), and hence f(x)=0f(x) = 0 for all f∈pf\in \mathfrak{p}. Conversely, if f(x)=0f(x) = 0 for all f∈pf\in \mathfrak{p}, then Tr((ad xx)n^n) =0= 0 for all n≥1n\geq 1 (Th. 1 (ii)), so xx is nilpotent.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
