Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 10. Maximal subalgebras of semi-simple Lie algebras

Let g\mathfrak{g} be a semi-simple Lie algebra, V a finite dimensional vector space, ρ\rho a linear representation of g\mathfrak{g} on V, D a vector subspace of V,h,\mathfrak{h} a Cartan subalgebra of g,s\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{s} (resp. s′\mathfrak{s}') the set of x∈hx\in \mathfrak{h} such that ρ(x)D⊂D\rho (x)D\subset D (resp. ρ(x)D=0\rho (x)D = 0), and Φ\Phi the bilinear form on g\mathfrak{g} associated 5^5 to ρ\rho.

(i) If h\mathfrak{h} is splitting, the vector subspaces s\mathfrak{s} and s′\mathfrak{s}' of h\mathfrak{h} are rational over Q\mathbf{Q}.

(ii) If ρ\rho is injective, the restriction of Φ\Phi to s\mathfrak{s} (resp. s′\mathfrak{s}') is non-degenerate.

Assume that the Cartan subalgebra h\mathfrak{h} is splitting. Let dd be the dimension of D; put W=⋀d(V)W =\bigwedge^d(V) and σ=⋀d(ρ)\sigma =\bigwedge^d(\rho ); denote also by (e1,...,ed)(e_1, . . . , e_d) a basis of D and e=e1∧⋯∧ede=e_1\wedge \cdots \wedge e_d a decomposable dd-vector associated to D. Let P be the set of weights of σ\sigma with respect to h\mathfrak{h}; denote by WμW^\mu the subspace of

5^5 In other words, Φ(x,y)=\Phi (x, y) = Tr(ρ(x)ρ(y)\rho (x)\rho (y)) for x,y∈gx, y\in \mathfrak{g}. W associated to the weight μ\mu, and put e=∑μ∈Peμe=\sum_{\mu\in P}e^\mu (with eμ∈Wμe^\mu\in W^\mu for all

μ∈P)\mu\in P); finally, let P′P' be the set of weights μ\mu such that eμ≠0e^\mu\not= 0 and let P′′P'' be the set of differences of elements of P′P'. Let xx be in h\mathfrak{h}; then xx belongs to s\mathfrak{s} if and only if there exists cc in kk such that ρ(x).e=c.e\rho (x).e=c.e (Chap. VII, §5, no. 4, Lemma 2 (i)). Since ρ(x).eμ=μ(x).eμ\rho (x).e^\mu=\mu(x).e^\mu, we see that x∈sx\in \mathfrak{s} is equivalent to the relation “μ(x)=0\mu(x) = 0 for all μ∈P′′\mu\in P'' ”. Now, the Q\mathbf{Q}-structure of h\mathfrak{h} is the Q\mathbf{Q}-vector subspace hQ\mathfrak{h}_{\mathbf{Q}} of h\mathfrak{h} generated by the coroots HαH_{\alpha} and all μ\mu in P′′P'' take rational values on hQ\mathfrak{h}_{\mathbf{Q}}; it follows (Algebra, Chap. II, §8, no. 4, Prop. 5) that s\mathfrak{s} is a subspace of h\mathfrak{h} rational over Q\mathbf{Q}.

For any weight μ∈P\mu\in P, let pμp_\mu be the projection onto VμV^\mu associated to the decomposition V=⨁μ∈PVμV =\bigoplus_{\mu\in P}V^\mu; denote by P1P_1 the set of μ∈P\mu\in P such that

pμ(D)≠0p_\mu(D)\not= 0. It is immediate that s′\mathfrak{s}' is the intersection of the kernels (in h\mathfrak{h}) of the elements of P1P_1; it follows, in the same way as for s\mathfrak{s}, that s′\mathfrak{s}' is a subspace of h\mathfrak{h} rational over Q\mathbf{Q}. This proves (i).

By extension of scalars, it suffices to prove (ii) when kk is algebraically closed, hence when h\mathfrak{h} is splitting. Let m\mathfrak{m} be a vector subspace of h\mathfrak{h} rational over Q\mathbf{Q}; for all non-zero xx in mQ=m∩hQ\mathfrak{m}_{\mathbf{Q}}=\mathfrak{m}\cap \mathfrak{h}_{\mathbf{Q}}, we have Φ(x,x)>0\Phi (x, x)>0 by the Cor. of Prop. 1 of §7, no. 1. The restriction of Φ\Phi to mQ\mathfrak{m}_{\mathbf{Q}} is non-degenerate, and hence so is the restriction of Φ\Phi to m\mathfrak{m} since m\mathfrak{m} is canonically isomorphic to k⊗QmQk\otimes_{\mathbf{Q}}\mathfrak{m}_{\mathbf{Q}}.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
