Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IX, 390
An involutive Lie algebra is a (real) Lie algebra equipped with an automorphism such that . Denote by (resp. ) the eigenspace of relative to the eigenvalue +1 (resp. ) of .
a) Show that is a subalgebra of and that is a -module; we have , and and are orthogonal with respect to the Killing form.
b) Show that the following conditions are equivalent:
(i) The -module is simple.
(ii) The algebra is maximal among the subalgebras of distinct from . If these conditions are satisfied, and if contains no non-zero ideal of , the involutive Lie algebra is said to be irreducible.
c) Assume that is semi-simple. Show that the following conditions are equivalent:
(i) The only ideals of stable under are and ;
(ii) is either simple or the sum of two simple ideals interchanged by .
Show that these conditions are satisfied when is irreducible (observe that is the direct sum of ideals stable under and satisfying (ii)).
d) Assume from now on that is compact semi-simple. Show that the involutive Lie algebra is irreducible if and only if is different from the identity and satisfies the equivalent conditions in c) (let be a -submodule of and its orthogonal complement with respect to the Killing form; observe that and deduce that is an ideal of ).
e) Prove that is the direct sum of a family of ideals stable under , such that is fixed by and such that the involutive algebras are irreducible for .
