Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter IX, § 2. Maximal tori of compact Lie groups

Let G be a Lie group, K a compact subgroup of G, and F an invariant bilinear form on L(G). Let x,y∈L(G)x, y\in L(G). There exists an element kk of K such that F(uF(u,[(Ad kk)(x),y])=0(x), y]) = 0 for all u∈L(K)u\in L(K).

The function v→v \rightarrow F((Ad vv)(x),y(x), y) from K to R\mathbf{R} is continuous, and hence has a minimum at some point k∈Kk\in K. Let u∈L(K)u\in L(K) and put

h(t)=h(t) = F((Ad exp(tutu).k.k)(x),y(x), y),t∈R,t\in \mathbf{R}.

We have h(t)≥h(0)h(t)\geq h(0) for all tt; moreover, by Chap. III, §3, no. 12, Prop. 44,

dhdt(0)=F([u\frac{dh}{dt}(0) = F([u,(Ad kk)(x)],y)=F(u(x)], y) = F(u,[(Ad kk)(x),y])(x), y]),

hence the lemma (Functions of a Real Variable, Chap. I, §1, no. 7, Prop. 7).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
