Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let X and Y be two real manifolds of class Cr(1≤r≤ω)C^r(1\leq r\leq \omega ), separated, connected and of dimension nn; let f:X→Yf: X\rightarrow Y be a proper morphism of class CrC^r, equipped with an orientation F (Differentiable and Analytic Manifolds, Results, 10.2.5).

a) Show that there exists a unique real number dd such that ∫Xf∗α=d∫Yα\int_Xf^*\alpha =d\int_Y\alpha for every twisted differential form α\alpha of degree nn on Y of class C1C^1 and of compact support (use Differentiable and Analytic Manifolds, Results, 11.2.4). b) Let y∈Yy\in Y be such that ff is étale at every point of f−1(y)f^{-1}(y). For x∈f−1(y)x\in f^{-1}(y), put νx(f)=1\nu_x(f) = 1 (resp. νx(f)=−1\nu_x(f) =-1) if the maps FxF_x and f~x(\widetilde{f}_x(Differentiable and Analytic Manifolds, Results, 10.2.5, Example b))b)) from Or(Tx(X)_x(X)) to Or(Ty(Y)_y(Y)) coincide (resp. are opposite). Prove that d=∑x∈f−1(y)νx(f)d=\sum_{x\in f^{-1}(y)}\nu_x(f) and, in particular, that d∈Zd\in \mathbf{Z}.

We call dd the degree of ff and denote it by deg ff. If X = Y and X is orientable, we can take for F the orientation that preserves the orientation of X.

c) Show that, if deg f≠0f\not= 0 then ff is surjective.

d) If there exists x∈Xx\in X such that f−1(f(x))={x}f^{-1}(f(x)) =\{x\} and such that ff is étale at xx, then ff is surjective.
