Let G be a connected compact Lie group, dgdg the normalized Haar measure on G.

a) Let f:G→Gf: G\rightarrow G be a morphism of manifolds; for g∈Gg\in G, the differential Tg(f)T_g(f) can be identified by left translations with a linear map from L(G) to L(G). Prove the formulas

deg f.∫Gφ(g)dg=∫Gφ(f(gf.\int_G\varphi (g)dg=\int_G\varphi (f(g))det Tg(f)dgT_g(f)dg

for every integrable (complex-valued) function φ\varphi on G, and

deg f=∫Gf=\int_G det Tg(f)dgT_g(f)dg.

b) Let ψk:G→G\psi_k: G\rightarrow G be the map g→gkg \rightarrow g^k. Prove the formula

deg ψk=∫G\psi_k=\int_G det(1 + Ad g+⋯+g+\cdots + (Ad gg)k−1^{k-1})dgdg.

c) Let T be a maximal torus of G, and TrT_r the set of regular elements of T. Show that expG−1(Tr)⊂L(T)^{-1}_G(T_r)\subset L(T) and ψk−1(Tr)⊂Tr\psi_k^{-1}(T_r)\subset T_r for all k≥1k\geq 1.

d) Show that deg ψk=kdim(T)\psi_k=k^{dim(T)}; deduce the equality ∫G\int_G det(1 + Ad g+⋯+g+\cdots + (Ad gg)k−1^{k-1})dg=kdim(T)dg=k^{dim(T)}.
