Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IX, 394

a) Show that the Lie algebra of the real Lie group U(n,H)\mathbf{U}(n,\mathbf{H}) is the set of matrices x∈Mn(H)x\in M_n(\mathbf{H}) such that tx‾=−x^t\overline{x}=-x, with the bracket [x,y]=xy−yx[x, y] =xy-yx. Denote it by u(n,H)\mathfrak{u}(n,\mathbf{H}).

b) Identify C\mathbf{C} with the subfield R(i)\mathbf{R}(i) of H\mathbf{H}, and C2n\mathbf{C}^{2n} with Hn\mathbf{H}^n by the isomorphism (z1,...,z2n)→(z1+jzn+1,...,zn+jz2n)(z_1, . . . , z_{2n}) \rightarrow (z_1+jz_{n+1}, . . . , z_n+jz_{2n}). Prove the equality U(n,H)=U(2n,C)∩Sp(2n,C)\mathbf{U}(n,\mathbf{H}) =\mathbf{U}(2n,\mathbf{C})\cap \mathbf{S}\mathbf{p}(2n,\mathbf{C}).

c) Deduce from b) that every compact simple (real) Lie algebra of type CnC_n is isomorphic to u(n,H)\mathfrak{u}(n,\mathbf{H}).
