Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter IX, § 4. Root system associated to a compact group

The bilinear form (a,X)→⟨a,X⟩(a, X) \rightarrow \langle a, X\rangle on X(S)×Γ(S)X(S)\times \Gamma (S) is invertible.

Recall (Algebra, Chap. IX) that, by definition, this means that the linear maps X(S)→X(S)\rightarrow HomZ(Γ(S),Z)_{\mathbf{Z}}(\Gamma (S),\mathbf{Z}) and Γ(S)→\Gamma (S)\rightarrow HomZ(X(S),Z)_{\mathbf{Z}}(X(S),\mathbf{Z}) associated to this bilinear form are bijective.

It is immediate that if the conclusion of the proposition is true for two tori, it is also true for their product. Thus, since every torus of dimension nn is isomorphic to Un\mathbf{U}^n, we are reduced to the case in which S=US =\mathbf{U}. In this particular case, the assertion is immediate.

Let f:S→S′f: S\rightarrow S' be a morphism of tori. Then, each of the linear maps X(f):X(S′)→X(S)X(f) : X(S')\rightarrow X(S) and Γ(f):Γ(S)→Γ(S′)\Gamma (f) :\Gamma (S)\rightarrow \Gamma (S') is the transpose of the other: for all a′∈X(S′)a'\in X(S') and all X∈ΓX\in \Gamma(S),

⟨X(f)(a′),X⟩=⟨a′,Γ(f)(X)⟩(3) \langle X(f)(a'), X\rangle =\langle a', \Gamma (f)(X)\rangle \tag{3}

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
