Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter IX, § 4. Root system associated to a compact group

Let ff : S →S′\rightarrow S' be a morphism of tori. The snake diagram (Algebra, Chap. X, §1, no. 2) associated to (1) gives an exact sequence

0 ⟶\longrightarrow KerΓ(f)⟶\Gamma (f)\longrightarrow Ker L(f)⟶L(f)\longrightarrow Ker f⟶df\longrightarrow^d (4)

⟶d\longrightarrow^d Coker Γ(f)⟶\Gamma (f)\longrightarrow Coker L(f)⟶L(f)\longrightarrow Coker f⟶0f\longrightarrow 0.

In particular, assume that ff is surjective, with finite kernel N, so that we have an exact sequence

0 ⟶\longrightarrow N ⟶i\longrightarrow^i S ⟶fS′⟶0\longrightarrow^fS'\longrightarrow 0,

where ii is the canonical injection. Then, L(f)L(f) is bijective, and (4) gives an isomorphism N→N\rightarrow Coker Γ(f)\Gamma (f), hence an exact sequence

0 ⟶Γ(S)⟶Γ(f)Γ(S′)⟶\longrightarrow \Gamma (S)\overset{\Gamma(f)}{\longrightarrow}\Gamma (S')\longrightarrow N ⟶0\longrightarrow 0. (5)

Moreover, by Spectral Theories, Chap. II, §1, no. 7, Th. 4, the sequence

0 ⟶X(S′)⟶X(f)\longrightarrow X(S')\overset{X(f)}{\longrightarrow} X(S) ⟶X(i)\longrightarrow^{X(i)} X(N) ⟶\longrightarrow 0 (6)

is exact.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
