Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter IX, § 4. Root system associated to a compact group

Let α∈R(G,T)\alpha \in R(G,T). The centralizer ZαZ_{\alpha} of the kernel of α\alpha is a connected closed subgroup of G; its centre is Ker α\alpha; its derived group D(Zα)=SαD(Z_{\alpha}) = S_{\alpha} is a connected closed semi-simple subgroup of G of rank 1. We have R(Zα,T)={α,−α}R(Z_{\alpha},T) =\{\alpha ,-\alpha \} and dim Zα=Z_{\alpha}= dim T + 2.

Let Zα′Z'_{\alpha} be the centralizer of (Ker α\alpha )0_0. By Lemma 2, this is a connected closed subgroup of G, and R(Zα′,T)R(Z'_{\alpha},T) is the set of β∈R(G,T)\beta \in R(G,T) such that β\beta((Kerα\alpha )0_0) ={1}=\{1\}. Clearly, {α,−α}⊂R(Zα′,T)\{\alpha ,-\alpha \} \subset R(Z'_{\alpha},T). Conversely, let β∈R(Zα′,T)\beta \in R(Z'_{\alpha},T); since (Ker α\alpha )0_0 is of finite index in Ker α\alpha, there exists an integer r≠0r\not= 0 such that trβ=1t^{r\beta}= 1 for t∈t\in Ker α\alpha. From the exactness of the sequence

0⟶Z⟶X(T)⟶0\longrightarrow \mathbf{Z}\longrightarrow X(T)\longrightarrow X(Ker α\alpha )⟶0\longrightarrow 0

corresponding by duality to the exact sequence

0 ⟶\longrightarrow Kerα⟶\alpha \longrightarrow T ⟶αU⟶0\longrightarrow^{\alpha}\mathbf{U}\longrightarrow 0,

it follows that rβr\beta is a multiple of α\alpha; by Chap. VIII, §2, no. 2, Th. 2 (i), this implies that β∈{α,−α}\beta \in \{\alpha ,-\alpha \}. Thus, R(Zα′,T)={α,−α}R(Z'_{\alpha},T) =\{\alpha ,-\alpha \}. It follows (Lemma 2) that the centre of Zα′Z'_{\alpha} is Kerα\alpha, so Zα′=ZαZ'_{\alpha}= Z_{\alpha}. Finally, by Cor. 1 of Prop. 4 (§1, no. 4), D(Zα)D(Z_\alpha) is a connected closed semi-simple subgroup of GG; it is of rank 11 because L(Zα)(C)=gα+g−α+[gα,g−α]\mathscr{L}(Z_\alpha)(\mathbf C)=\mathfrak{g}^\alpha+\mathfrak{g}^{-\alpha}+[\mathfrak{g}^\alpha,\mathfrak{g}^{-\alpha}].

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
