Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IX, 397

Let nn be an integer ≥2\geq 2.

a) Let g∈O(2n,R)g\in \mathbf{O}(2n,\mathbf{R}) with det g=−1g=-1; show that the automorphism Int gg of O(2n,R)\mathbf{O}(2n,\mathbf{R}) induces an automorphism of SO(2n,R)\mathbf{S}\mathbf{O}(2n,\mathbf{R}) that is not inner.

b) For n≥2n\geq 2, the group Aut(SO(2n,R)\mathbf{S}\mathbf{O}(2n,\mathbf{R})) is equal to Int(O(2n,R)\mathbf{O}(2n,\mathbf{R})) (which is isomorphic to O(2n,R)/{±I2n}\mathbf{O}(2n,\mathbf{R})/\{\pm I_{2n}\}).

c) Establish an analogous result for Spin(2n,R)(2n,\mathbf{R}) and SO(2n,R)/{±I2n}\mathbf{S}\mathbf{O}(2n,\mathbf{R})/\{\pm I_{2n}\}. If nn is even and ≠2\not= 2, every automorphism of the group Spin(2n,R)/{1,ε}((2n,\mathbf{R})/\{1, \varepsilon \}(§3, Exerc. 5) is inner.
