Let τ:G→GL(V)\tau : G\rightarrow \mathbf{G}\mathbf{L}(V) be a continuous representation of G on a finite dimensional real vector space. Assume that for all λ∈X(T)\lambda \in X(T), we have dimCV~λ≤1_{\mathbf{C}}\widetilde{V}_{\lambda}\leq 1.

a) Show that the representation τ\tau is the direct sum of a finite family (τi)1≤i≤s(\tau_i)_{1\leq i\leq s} of irreducible representations, mutually non-isomorphic, whose commutants Ki(1≤i≤s)K_i(1\leq i\leq s) are isomorphic to R\mathbf{R} or C\mathbf{C}.

b) There exists a C\mathbf{C}-vector space structure on V for which the operations of τ(G)\tau (G) are C\mathbf{C}-linear if and only if K1,...,KsK_1, . . . ,K_s are isomorphic to C\mathbf{C}; there are then 2s2^s structures of this type.
