Let R be an irreducible root system, R∨R^{\vee} the inverse system, B a basis of R and α\alpha the highest root of R (relative to B). Put

α=∑β∈Bnββ\alpha =\sum_{\beta\in B}n_{\beta}\beta and α∨=∑β∈Bnβ∨β∨\alpha^{\vee}=\sum_{\beta\in B}n^{\vee}_{\beta}\beta^{\vee};

let ν(R)=\nu (R) = supβ∈Bnβ∨_{\beta\in B}n^{\vee}_{\beta}. a) Show that the interval 1,ν(R)1, \nu (R) in N\mathbf{N} is the union of 1 and the nβ∨n^{\vee}_{\beta} for β∈B\beta \in B (put α0=α\alpha_0=\alpha; let (α1,...,αq)(\alpha_1, . . . , \alpha_q) be a sequence of distinct elements of B such that αi\alpha_i is not orthogonal to αi−1\alpha_{i-1} for i=1,...,qi= 1, . . . , q, such that nα∨=ν(R)n^{\vee}_{\alpha}=\nu (R) and such that qq is maximal with these properties; prove that nαi∨=qi+1n^{\vee}_{\alpha_i}=^{^q}i+ 1 for i=1,...,qi= 1, . . . , q).

b) Let pp be a prime number. Show that the following three properties are equivalent:

(i) p≤ν(R)p\leq \nu (R);

(ii) there exists β∈B\beta \in B such that p=nβ∨p=n^{\vee}_{\beta};

(iii) there exists β∈B\beta \in B such that pp divides nβ∨n^{\vee}_{\beta}.

In this case pp is called a torsion prime number of R.

c) For each type of irreducible root system, give the value of ν(R)\nu (R) and the torsion prime numbers. Show that the set of the nβn_{\beta} and that of the nβ∨n^{\vee}_{\beta} coincide except for type G2G_2.

d) Let R′R' be a symmetric closed subset of R that is irreducible as a root system. Show that ν(R′)≤ν(R)\nu (R')\leq \nu (R).
