Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter IX, § 7. Irreducible representations of connected compact Lie groups

The homomorphism Ch induces an isomorphism from R(G) to Z[X(T)]WZ[X(T)]^W.

For λ∈X++\lambda \in X_{++}, denote by [λ][\lambda ] the class in R(G) of the irreducible representation of highest weight λ\lambda. Since the family ([λ])λ∈X++([\lambda ])_{\lambda\in X_{++}} is a basis of the Z\mathbf{Z}-module R(G), it suffices to prove the following assertion:

The family (Ch[λ]\lambda ])λ∈X++_{\lambda\in X_{++}} is a basis of the Z\mathbf{Z}-module Z[X(T)]W\mathbf{Z}[X(T)]^W.

For every element u=∑λaλeλu=\sum_{\lambda}a_{\lambda}e^{\lambda} of Z[X(T)]\mathbf{Z}[X(T)], a term aλeλa_{\lambda}e^{\lambda} in uu is called maximal if λ\lambda is a maximal element of the set of μ∈X(T)\mu\in X(T) such that aμ≠0a_\mu\not= 0. Th. 1 implies that Ch[λ]\lambda ] has a unique maximal term, namely eλe^{\lambda}. Thus, the proposition follows from the following lemma.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
