Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IX, 419

Let A be the compact subset of R\mathbf{R} consisting of 0 and the real numbers 1/n1/n, with nn an integer ≥1\geq 1. Show that when Cr(R;R)\mathscr{C}^r(\mathbf{R};\mathbf{R}) is given the topology of uniform CrC^r-convergence on A, the set of morphisms that are embeddings in the neighbourhood of A is not open in Cr(R;R)\mathscr{C}^r(\mathbf{R};\mathbf{R}) (consider a sequence of functions (fn)n≥1(f_n)_{n\geq 1} such that fn(x)=xf_n(x) =x for x≤1n+1,fn(x)=x−1nx\leq \frac{1}{n+1},f_n(x) =x-\frac{1}{n} for x≥1nx\geq \frac{1}{n}).
