Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter IX, Appendix 2. Representations of real, complex or quaternionic type

Assume that ρ\rho is irreducible. Then, ρ\rho is of real (resp. complex, resp. quaternionic) type if and only if the integral ∫G\int_G Trρ(g2)dg\rho (g^2)dg is equal to 1 (resp. 0, resp. −1-1).

Denote by ρˇ\check{\rho} the contragredient representation of ρ\rho on W∗W^* (defined by ρˇ(g)=tρ(g−1)\check{\rho}(g) =^t\rho (g^{-1})). Applying Lemma 2 to ρˇ(g)\check{\rho}(g) and integrating over G gives

∫G\int_G Trρ(g2)dg=∫G\rho (g^2)dg=\int_G Tr tρ(g−2)dg=∫G^t\rho (g^{-2})dg=\int_G Tr S2(ρˇ(g))dg−∫G\mathbf{S}^2( \check{\rho}(g))dg-\int_G Tr ∧∧2(ρˇ(g))dg\wedge \wedge^2( \check{\rho}(g))dg

hence, by Lemma 1,

∫G\int_G Tr ρ(g2)dg=\rho (g^2)dg= dim(S2W∗\mathbf{S}^2W^*)G−^G- dim(∧∧2W∗\wedge \wedge^2W^*)G^G.

But S2W∗\mathbf{S}^2W^* (resp. ∧∧2W∗\wedge \wedge^2W^*) can be identified with the space of symmetric (resp. alternating) bilinear forms on W. Thus, the proposition follows immediately from Prop. 3.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
