Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VII, 56

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Assume that kk is infinite. Let g\mathfrak{g} be a Lie algebra, C∞g\mathscr{C}_{\infty}\mathfrak{g} the union of the ascending central series of g\mathfrak{g}, and xx an element of g\mathfrak{g}. Prove the equivalence of the following properties:

(i) xx belongs to every Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}.

(ii) x∈g0(y)x\in \mathfrak{g}^0(y) for all y∈gy\in \mathfrak{g} (i.e. x∈g0(g)x\in \mathfrak{g}^0(\mathfrak{g})).

(iii) x∈C∞gx\in \mathscr{C}_{\infty}\mathfrak{g}.

(The implications (iii) =⇒=\Rightarrow(ii) =⇒=\Rightarrow(i) are immediate. To prove that (i) =⇒=\Rightarrow(ii), remark that (i) is equivalent to saying that x∈g0(y)x\in \mathfrak{g}^0(y) for every regular element yy in g\mathfrak{g}, and use the fact that the regular elements are dense in g\mathfrak{g} in the Zariski topology. To prove that (ii) =⇒=\Rightarrow (iii), observe that n=g0(g)\mathfrak{n}=\mathfrak{g}^0(\mathfrak{g}) is stable under g(\mathfrak{g}(§1, Exerc. 5) and apply Engel’s theorem to the g\mathfrak{g}-module n\mathfrak{n}; deduce that n\mathfrak{n} is contained in L∞g.)\mathscr{L}_{\infty}\mathfrak{g}.)
