Let B be a topological space, A a subspace of B and F=(F(U),fUV) a presheaf on A. Let i:A→B denote the canonical injection. Then one has i∗(F)=(F′(U),fUV′) where for every open set U of B,F′(U)=F(U∩A), and for every pair (U,V) of open sets of B with U⊂V,fUV′=f(U∩A)(V∩A).
Let now G be a presheaf on B. The inverse image of the presheaf G by u is defined to be, and is denoted by u∗(G), the sheaf CB(A;EG) on A of B-morphisms with values in the B-space EG(I, p. 45, example 4). It is canonically isomorphic to the sheaf on A of sections of the étalé A-space A×BEG (I, p. 9, prop. 3). From this one deduces (I, p. 52, example 2) a canonical isomorphism φ of the étalé space associated with u∗(G) onto the A-space A×BEG. If moreover G is a sheaf, for every point a of A there is a canonical bijection ψa:u∗(G)a→Gu(a): for every open neighbourhood U of a in A and every B-morphism f:U→EG, one has
φ([U,f,a])=(a,f(a)),ψa([U,f,a])=f(a)
Let G1 and G2 be presheaves on B and let φ:G1→G2 be a morphism of presheaves. By base change of the morphism of étalé B-spaces E(φ):EG1→EG2 one obtains a morphism of étalé A-spaces A×BEG1→A×BEG2, whence a morphism of sheaves on A,u∗(φ):u∗(G1)→u∗(G2). Let G3 be a presheaf on B and let ψ:G2→G3 be a morphism of presheaves. Then one has the equality u∗(ψ∘φ)=u∗(ψ)∘u∗(φ).
Let C be a topological space and let v:B→ C be a continuous mapping. If G is a presheaf on C, the sheaves u∗(v∗(G)) and (v∘u)∗(G) are canonically identified (I, p. 5). If φ:G1→G2 is a morphism of presheaves on C, one has moreover u∗(v∗(φ))=(v∘u)∗(φ).
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
