Let E be the numerical space of dimension nn and let A be a convex and compact subset of E of which 0 is an interior point. There exists a unique bijection uu of E onto itself satisfying the following three properties:

(i) For every x∈Ex\in E and every t∈R+,u(tx)=tu(x)t\in \mathbf{R}_+,u(tx) =tu(x);

(ii) For every x∈Ex\in E, there exists λ∈R+\lambda \in \mathbf{R}_+ such that u(x)=λxu(x) =\lambda x;

(iii) One has u(A)=Bnu(A) =\mathbf{B}_n.

The mapping uu is a homeomorphism and induces, by passing to subspaces, a homeomorphism of A onto Bn\mathbf{B}_n, a homeomorphism of the interior of A onto the interior of Bn\mathbf{B}_n and a homeomorphism of the boundary of A in E onto the sphere Sn−1\mathbf{S}_{n-1}.

Let pAp_A be the gauge of the convex subset A. Let x∈Ex\in E and let t∈R+t\in \mathbf{R}_+; in order that x∈tAx\in tA, it is necessary and sufficient that pA(x)⩽tp_A(x)\leqslant t. Since A is compact, there exists a real number M such that ∥x∥⩽M\|x\|\leqslant M for every x∈Ax\in A.

Let uu be a mapping satisfying the conditions of the proposition. We have u(0)=0u(0) = 0. Let x∈E−{0}x\in E-\{0\} and let λ∈R+\lambda \in \mathbf{R}_+ be such that u(x)=λxu(x) =\lambda x. For every t∈R+t\in \mathbf{R}_+ such that tx∈Atx\in A, we have u(tx)=tλxu(tx) =t\lambda x. Since uu is injective, λ=0̸\lambda = 0\not . Since u(A)u(A) is contained in Bn\mathbf{B}_n, we also have λ⩽pA(x)/∥x∥\lambda \leqslant p_A(x)/\|x\|. Put z=x/∥x∥z=x/\|x\|; this is a point of Sn−1\mathbf{S}_{n-1}. In order that zz should have a preimage in A under uu, it is necessary and sufficient that the point (λ∥x∥)−1x(\lambda \|x\|)^{-1}x should belong to A, that is, that λ∥x∥⩾pA(x)\lambda \|x\|\geqslant p_A(x), i.e. λ⩾pA(x)/∥x∥\lambda \geqslant p_A(x)/\|x\|. This implies the uniqueness of such a mapping uu.

Let us now denote by uu the mapping of E into itself which maps 0 to 0 and xx to (pA(x)/∥x∥)x(p_A(x)/\|x\|)x, for every x∈E−{0}x\in E-\{0\}.

By Lemma 1,u1,u is continuous at every point of E −{0}-\{0\}. We have ∥u(x)∥=pA(x)\|u(x)\|=p_A(x) for every x∈Ex\in E and pA(x)→0p_A(x)\rightarrow 0 when x→0x\rightarrow 0 (loc. cit.); consequently, uu is continuous at 0. Therefore uu is continuous.

The only preimage of 0 under uu is 0. Let y∈E−{0}y\in E-\{0\}. In order that an element xx of E should satisfy u(x)=yu(x) =y, it is necessary and sufficient that x=(∥y∥/pA(y))yx= (\|y\|/p_A(y))y. It follows that uu is a continuous bijection of E onto itself. Its inverse is the mapping v:y↦(∥y∥/pA(y))yv:y\mapsto (\|y\|/p_A(y))y. Since pAp_A is continuous and vanishes only at 0, the mapping vv is continuous at every point of E −{0}-\{0\}; the inequality pA(y)⩾∥y∥/Mp_A(y)\geqslant \|y\|/M implies that ∥v(y)∥⩽M∥y∥\|v(y)\|\leqslant M\|y\| for every y∈Ey\in E. It follows that vv is continuous. Therefore the mapping uu is a homeomorphism of E onto itself. Since the relations pA(x)⩽1p_A(x)\leqslant 1 and x∈Ax\in A are equivalent, we also have u(X)=Bnu(X) =\mathbf{B}_n. The proposition follows.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
