Topologie algébrique, chapter I, § 6. Espaces simplement connexes

Let X be a topological space. Let U1U_1 and U2U_2 be open ( resp. closed) subspaces of X such that X=U1∪U2X = U_1\cup U_2. Suppose that U1U_1 and U2U_2 are simply connected and that their intersection U1∩U2U_1\cap U_2 is connected and nonempty. Then the space X is simply connected.

Let (E,p)(E, p) be a covering of X and let yy be a point of E. It is enough to prove that there exists a continuous section ss of pp such that s(p(y))=ys(p(y)) =y (I, p. 70, cor. 2 of prop. 1). Suppose for example that p(y)p(y) belongs to U1U_1. There then exists a continuous section s1:U1→Es_1: U_1\rightarrow E of pU1p_{U_1} such that s1(p(y))=ys_1(p(y)) =y. Let xx be a point of U1∩U2U_1\cap U_2; there exists a continuous section s2s_2 of pU2p_{U_2} such that s2(x)=s1(x)s_2(x) =s_1(x). By corollary 3 of proposition 11 of I, p. 34, there exists a continuous section ss of pp extending both s1s_1 and s2s_2.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
