The group G is generated by S.

Let H be the subgroup of G generated by S. Let U=H⋅MU = H\cdot M; observe that U is the union of the subsets of the form h⋅(S⋅M)h\cdot (S\cdot M), for h∈Hh\in H. Since S⋅MS\cdot M is a neighbourhood of M (lemma 2), the set U is a neighbourhood of H⋅M=UH\cdot M = U; it follows that U is open in X. Let g,g′∈Gg, g'\in G be such that g⋅U∩g′⋅U=∅̸g\cdot U\cap g'\cdot U=\not\emptyset; let h,h′∈Hh, h'\in H and x,x′∈Mx, x'\in M be such that gh⋅x=g′h′⋅x′gh\cdot x=g'h'\cdot x'; then h−1g−1g′h′⋅x′=xh^{-1}g^{-1}g'h'\cdot x'=x, so that h−1g−1g′h′∈Sh^{-1}g^{-1}g'h'\in S; in particular, g−1g′∈Hg^{-1}g'\in H. When gg runs through a system of representatives of the left classes modulo H, the sets g⋅Ug\cdot U are thus pairwise disjoint; since G⋅M=XG\cdot M = X, they cover X. As X is connected, it follows that (G : H) = 1, whence H = G.

Let T be the set of pairs (s,t)(s, t) of elements of G such that M∩s⋅M\cap s\cdot M∩st⋅M=∅̸M\cap st\cdot M=\not\emptyset; if (s,t)∈T(s, t)\in T, then s,ts,t and stst belong to S. Let F be the group F(S,r)F(S,\mathbf{r}) defined by the generating set S and by the set r\mathbf{r} of relators str−1str^{-1} for r,s,t∈Sr, s, t\in S such that (s,t)∈T(s, t)\in T and r=str=st; let us denote by ε\varepsilon its identity element and by φ:F→G\varphi : F\rightarrow G the canonical homomorphism (A, I, p. 86, prop. 9). If s∈Ss\in S, we shall denote by xsx_s the element of F, image of ss under the canonical mapping of S into F; for every s∈Ss\in S, one has φ(xs)=s\varphi (x_s) =s. The homomorphism φ\varphi is therefore surjective (lemma 3). For (s,t)∈T(s, t)\in T and r=str=st, one has xr=xsxtx_r=x_sx_t; hence xe=εx_e=\varepsilon, since (e,e)∈T(e, e)\in T; for every s∈Ss\in S, one has also xs−1=xs−1x_{s^{-1}}=x^{-1}_s since (s,s−1)∈T(s, s^{-1})\in T.

Endow the set F with the discrete topology and let Z denote the topological space F×MF\times M, endowed with the operation of F given by (γ,(g,x))↦(\gamma ,(g, x))\mapsto (γg,x)(\gamma g, x), for γ\gamma and g∈g\in F and u∈u\in M. Let (g1,u1)(g_1, u_1) and (g2,u2)(g_2, u_2) be elements of Z; we shall say that (g1,u1)(g_1, u_1) is congruent to (g2,u2)(g_2, u_2) if there exists s∈Ss\in S such that g2=g1⋅xsg_2=g_1\cdot x_s and s⋅u2=u1s\cdot u_2=u_1.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
