Topologie algébrique, chapter II, § 3. Groupoïdes

A nonempty graph G is a tree if and only if the groupoid ϖG\varpi_G is simply transitive.

Let aa be a point of G. By Corollary 1, the following properties are equivalent:

(i) The isotropy group of ϖG\varpi_G at aa is reduced to the identity element;

(ii) The only loop in G with origin aa which is without backtracking is the constant loop with origin aa.

The groupoid ϖG\varpi_G is simply transitive if and only if it is transitive and has property (i) for every aa. The graph G is a tree if and only if it is connected and has property (ii) for every point aa. Since the orbits of ϖG\varpi_G are identified with the connected components of G, the corollary follows.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
