Topologie algébrique, chapter III, § 2. Homotopie et chemins
Let E be a totally ordered set not reduced to one element. Suppose that every subset of E has a supremum and that there exists a countable subset of E which meets every open interval , where and are elements of E such that . There then exists an isomorphism of ordered sets of onto E.
Since and E each have a supremum in E, E has a smallest element and a greatest element . These are distinct since E is not reduced to one element. Let be a countable subset of E which meets every open interval of E of the form , with . Put . The set D is totally ordered and without gaps. By lemma 6, there exists an isomorphism of ordered sets of onto D.
For every , let be the supremum of in E. For every , let be the supremum of in . The mappings and thus defined are increasing, coincides with in and coincides with in D.
We therefore have for every . Let . If one had , the interval would contain a point of D and the relations would contradict the fact that is increasing. Analogously, one does not have . We therefore have , which proves that is the identity mapping of E. One proves analogously that is the identity mapping of . Thus, and are reciprocal isomorphisms of ordered sets.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
