Topologie algébrique, chapter IV, § 6. Espaces classifiants
Suppose that G is a metrizable topological group. Then the topological group is metrizable. More precisely, if is a bounded distance on G which defines its topology, the topology of is defined by the distance .
Let be a distance on G which defines its topology. Then, the mapping given by inf() is a bounded distance on G which also defines its topology (TG, IX, p. 3). It is therefore enough to prove that defines the topology of under the assumption that is bounded.
Let V be a neighbourhood of in G and let be a strictly positive real number. Let be a strictly positive real number such that V contains the ball . Let and let be a sequence adapted to . Then,
Consequently, the ball in is contained in .
Conversely, let be a strictly positive real number and let Δ be a strictly positive upper bound for the diameter of G. Let V be a neighbourhood of in G contained in the ball . For a function and a sequence adapted to , one has

The preceding inequality implies that, for every element of , one has . Consequently, every ball of for the distance contains a neighbourhood of the identity element.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
