Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 5. Algèbres de Banach commutatives régulières

Let A~\widetilde{A} be the Banach algebra deduced from A by adjunction of a unit element ee. Condition (ii) of prop. 1 shows that if A~\widetilde{A} is regular, then A is regular. Suppose that A is regular and let us show that A~\widetilde{A} is regular. Consider subsets F and F′F' of X(A~)\mathsf{X}(\widetilde{A}) which are disjoint and weakly closed (hence weakly compact) and construct an x∈A~x\in \widetilde{A} such that G(x)\mathscr{G}(x) vanishes on F, and is equal to 1 on F′F'. Let χ0∈X(A~)\chi_0\in \mathsf{X}(\widetilde{A}) be the character which is zero on A. If χ0∉F′\chi_0\notin F', there exists, according to condition (iii) of prop. 1 and the assumption on A, an element x∈Ax\in A such that G(x)\mathscr{G}(x) vanishes on F and is equal to 1 on F′F'. If χ0∈F′\chi_0\in F', we have χ0∉F\chi_0\notin F; there exists therefore an element y∈Ay\in A such that G(y)\mathscr{G}(y) vanishes on F′F' and is equal to 1 on F. The element x=e−yx=e-y of A~\widetilde{A} then has the required property.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
