Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 5. Algèbres de Banach commutatives régulières
Let A be a unital commutative regular Banach algebra. Let be an integer and an open covering of . There exist elements of A of sum 1 such that Supp() for .
Let us prove the proposition by induction on . The assertion is valid if . Suppose that and that the assertion is established for .
There exists an open covering of such that for all . By the induction hypothesis, there exist elements such that and Supp(), Supp() for . Let K = Supp(). Let (resp. ) be the set of elements of K which do not belong to (resp. ). Then and are disjoint compact subsets of K. Since the Banach algebra A is regular, there therefore exists such that on and on . Then is zero on and on , hence Supp . Analogously, is zero on - K and on , hence Supp . The elements , and then satisfy the properties of the proposition.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
