Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 5. Algèbres de Banach commutatives régulières

Let A be a commutative regular Banach algebra without radical. Let J be the set of x∈Ax\in A such that G(x)\mathscr{G}(x) has compact support. Suppose that J = A. Then every closed ideal of A distinct from A is contained in a regular maximal ideal.

If I is a closed ideal of A which is contained in no regular maximal ideal, then V(I)=∅V(I) =\emptyset, hence I⊃JI\supset J (Prop. 4 applied to F = ∅\emptyset ), whence I⊃J‾=AI\supset \overline{J}= A.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
