Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 5. Algèbres de Banach commutatives régulières

Let A be a commutative regular Banach algebra without radical. Let x,y∈Ax, y\in A. If the support of G(x)\mathscr{G}(x) is compact and contained in the set of characters χ\chi such that G(y)(χ)≠0\mathscr{G}(y)(\chi )\not= 0, then xx is a multiple of yy in A.

Let I be the ideal AyAy of A. Then V(I) is the set of zeros of G(y)\mathscr{G}(y). Since the support F of G(x)\mathscr{G}(x) is compact and disjoint from V(I), we have x∈Ix\in I (Prop. 4 applied to F).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
