Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 7. Spectre des endomorphismes des espaces de Banach

Let E be a topological vector space and let uu be an endomorphism of E. The spectrum of uu, denoted by Sp(uu), is the spectrum of uu relative to the unital algebra L(E)\mathscr{L}(E).

Let E be a topological vector space and let u∈L(E)u\in \mathscr{L}(E). The spectrum of uu is the set of complex numbers λ\lambda such that u−λ1Eu-\lambda 1_E is not an automorphism of E. If E is metrisable complete, it is also the set of complex numbers λ\lambda such that u−λ1Eu-\lambda 1_E is not bijective (EVT, I, p. 19, Corollary 1).

Every eigenvalue of uu belongs to the spectrum of uu, but the converse is false in general.

In the remainder of this paragraph, we shall confine ourselves to studying the notion of spectrum in the case where E is a Banach space.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
