Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 7. Spectre des endomorphismes des espaces de Banach

Let E be a Banach space and let uu be an endomorphism of E. Let (Ei)i∈I(E_i)_{i\in I} be a finite family of closed subspaces of E, stable under uu, such that E=⨁i∈IEiE =\bigoplus_{i\in I}E_i. For each i∈Ii\in I, let uiu_i denote the endomorphism of EiE_i deduced from uu. Then Sp(uu) =⋃i∈I=\bigcup_{i\in I} Sp(uiu_i), and for every f∈Of\in \mathscr{O}(Sp(uu)), the endomorphism f(u)f(u) stabilises the spaces EiE_i, and f(u)f(u) coincides with f(ui)f(u_i) on EiE_i.

The endomorphism uu is an isomorphism if and only if uiu_i is an isomorphism for every i∈Ii\in I. Applying this property to u−λ1Eu-\lambda 1_E, we deduce that Sp(uu) is the union of the sets Sp(uiu_i) for i∈Ii\in I.

Let f∈Of\in \mathscr{O}(Sp(uu)). The endomorphism f(u)f(u) of E belongs to the bicommutant of uu in L(E)\mathscr{L}(E) (Theorem 5 of I, p. 74), and therefore commutes with the projectors pip_i. It therefore stabilizes the spaces EiE_i. Consider the continuous unital morphism ϖ\varpi of the product algebra ∏i∈IL(Ei)\prod_{i\in I}\mathscr{L}(E_i) into L(E)\mathscr{L}(E) defined by (vi)i∈I↦⨁ivi(v_i)_{i\in I}\mapsto \bigoplus_iv_i. It maps the family (ui)(u_i) to uu. Proposition 7 of I, p. 75 then implies that Sp(uu)⊂⋃i∈I\subset \bigcup_{i\in I} Sp(uiu_i) and

f(u)=f(ϖ((ui)i∈I))=ϖ((f(ui))i∈I)=⨁i∈If(ui) f(u) =f(\varpi ((u_i)_{i\in I})) =\varpi ((f(u_i))_{i\in I}) =\bigoplus_{i\in I}f(u_i)

which concludes the proof of the lemma.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
