Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 7. Spectre des endomorphismes des espaces de Banach
Let E be a Banach space and an endomorphism of E. Let and be closed subspaces of E invariant under such that . Suppose that the endomorphisms and of and induced by have disjoint spectra Sp() and = Sp(). Then Sp() and is the projector with image and kernel . In particular, one has and .
One has Sp() I, p. 128, Lemma 1). Since the sets and are compact, they are open and closed in Sp(). For every holomorphic function in a neighbourhood of Sp(), the endomorphism leaves and invariant and coincides in with and in with (loc. cit.). Take in particular for the germ of holomorphic function which is equal to 1 in a neighbourhood of and 0 in a neighbourhood of (cf. No. 12 of I, p. 81); then is the identity mapping of since = 1 in a neighbourhood of Sp(), and is zero since in a neighbourhood of . Hence is the projector with image and kernel , and therefore one has and .
Let E be a Banach space and an endomorphism of E. Let be a finite family of open and closed subsets of Sp(), pairwise disjoint, and let H be their union. Relations (15) and (16) of I, p. 81 imply the following assertions :
a) The family of projectors is orthogonal (that is to say, for all in such that , cf. A, II, p. 18, Def. 7) and its sum is ;
b) The vector space is the topological direct sum of the family ;
c) For every , one has ;
d) The vector space is the intersection of the family .
When H = Sp(), the decomposition as topological direct sum of E is called the spectral decomposition of E associated with and with the finite partition of Sp().
Let be an element of (Sp()). The spectrum of the endomorphism of E is the image under of the spectrum of I, p. 75, Prop. 8). Let L be a subset open and closed in Sp(). The set H of elements Sp() such that belongs to L is open and closed in Sp(), and one has since in (Sp()) (loc. cit.).
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
