Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 7. Spectre des endomorphismes des espaces de Banach

Let E be a complex Hilbert space and uu a normal endomorphism of E.

a) For every open and closed subset H of the spectrum of uu, the spectral projector eH(u)e_H(u) is an orthogonal projector whose kernel is the image of the spectral projector eSp(u)−H(u)e_{Sp(u)-H}(u) ;

b) If H1H_1 and H2H_2 are disjoint open and closed subsets of the spectrum of uu, then the spectral subspaces EH1E_{H_1} and EH2E_{H_2} are orthogonal ;

c) If λ∈C\lambda \in \mathbf{C} is an isolated point of the spectrum of uu, then λ\lambda is an eigenvalue of uu and the image of the spectral projector eλ(u)e_{\lambda}(u) is the eigenspace of uu relative to λ\lambda.

Let us prove a). Since the holomorphic functional calculus is compatible with the continuous functional calculus (I, p. 111, cor. 1), we have eH(u)=φH(u)e_H(u) =\varphi_H(u), where φH∈C\varphi_H\in \mathscr{C} (Sp(uu)) is the characteristic function of H. This implies eH(u)∗=φ‾H(u)=φH(u)=eH(u)e_H(u)^*=\overline{\varphi}_H(u) =\varphi_H(u) =e_H(u), hence eH(u)e_H(u) is an orthogonal projector (lemma 3, (ii)). Its kernel is the image of the projector 1−eH(u)=eSp(u)−H(u)1-e_H(u) =e_{Sp(u)-H}(u).

Let us prove b). The characteristic functions φH1\varphi_{H_1} and φH2\varphi_{H_2} of H1H_1 and H2H_2 in Sp(uu) are continuous and their product is zero, which implies eH1(u)∘eH2(u)=eH2(u)∘eH1(u)=0e_{H_1}(u)\circ e_{H_2}(u) =e_{H_2}(u)\circ e_{H_1}(u) = 0. The inclusions EH2(u)⊂EH1(u)∘E_{H_2}(u)\subset E_{H_1}(u)^{\circ} and EH1(u)⊂EH2(u)∘E_{H_1}(u)\subset E_{H_2}(u)^{\circ} follow.

Finally, let us prove assertion c). The characteristic function φλ\varphi_{\lambda} of {λ}\{\lambda \} is continuous and non-zero on Sp(uu) ; it satisfies (z−λ)φλ(z)=0(z-\lambda )\varphi_{\lambda}(z) = 0 for every z∈z\in Sp(uu). Hence we have (u−λ1E)φλ(u)=0(u-\lambda 1_E)\varphi_{\lambda}(u) = 0. The image of φλ(u)\varphi_{\lambda}(u), which is non-zero, is therefore contained in the proper subspace of uu relative to λ\lambda. Since we have eλ(u)=φλ(u)e_{\lambda}(u) =\varphi_{\lambda}(u) and the image of eλ(u)e_{\lambda}(u) contains the proper subspace of uu relative to λ\lambda, the assertion follows.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
