Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 7. Spectre des endomorphismes des espaces de Banach
Let E be a complex Hilbert space and let be an endomorphism of E.
a) The set of eigenvalues of is contained in ;
b) The spectrum of is contained in the closure of in .
Let be an eigenvalue of and let be a nonzero vector such that . Replacing by if necessary, one may suppose that . Then , hence .
Let us prove b). Considering , we are reduced to proving that if 0 belongs to the spectrum of , then 0 is adherent to .
Suppose first that there exists a real number 0 such that for every of norm 1 in E. Then the endomorphism is injective and closed (Lemma 8 of I, p. 107). Since it is not invertible by hypothesis, it is not surjective. Consequently, the orthogonal complement of the kernel of is not equal to E (EVT, V, p. 41, Prop. 4), which proves that the kernel of is not reduced to 0. Thus 0 belongs to , hence to .
If the preceding assumption is not valid, then for every integer , there exists a vector of norm 1 in E such that . We then have , which implies that 0 belongs to the closure of .
Proposition 7 (Hausdorff-Toeplitz Theorem)
Let E be a complex Hilbert space and let . The numerical range is a convex subset of .
We shall need two lemmas to prove this proposition.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
