Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 7. Spectre des endomorphismes des espaces de Banach

Let E be a complex Hilbert space. Let uu be an endomorphism of E. The following conditions are equivalent:

(i) The endomorphism uu is positive;

(ii) The numerical image of uu is contained in R+\mathbf{R}_+;

(iii) The endomorphism uu is a positive element of the involutive algebra L(E)\mathscr{L}(E) ;

(iv) There exists a hermitian element vv of L(E)\mathscr{L}(E) such that u=v2u=v^2;

(v) There exists a continuous linear mapping vv of E into a complex Hilbert space F such that u=v∗vu=v^*v.

By EVT, V, p. 45, def. 6,u6,u is positive if and only if it is hermitian and if ⟨x∣u(x)⟩⩾0\langle x|u(x)\rangle \geqslant 0 for every x∈Ex\in E. The implication (i) =⇒=\Rightarrow (ii) therefore follows from the definition of the numerical image.

(ii) =⇒=\Rightarrow (iii) : the assumption implies that uu is hermitian (EVT, V, p. 45, and remark, p. 2) and its spectrum is contained in R+\mathbf{R}_+ (prop. 6) ; hence uu is a positive element of the involutive algebra L(E)\mathscr{L}(E).

(iii) =⇒=\Rightarrow (iv) : this is a particular case of prop. 16 of I, p. 118.

(iv) =⇒=\Rightarrow (v) is immediate.

(v) =⇒=\Rightarrow (i) : let F be a complex Hilbert space and let v∈L(E;F)v\in \mathscr{L}(E; F) be such that u=v∗vu=v^*v. Let x∈Ex\in E. One has ⟨x∣u(x)⟩=⟨x∣(v∗v)(x)⟩=∥v(x)∥2\langle x|u(x)\rangle =\langle x|(v^*v)(x)\rangle =\|v(x)\|^2, which proves that uu is positive.

Recall (EVT, V, p. 45, remark 1) that, for every hermitian element uu of L(E)\mathscr{L}(E), one sets

m(u)=m(u) = inf∥xx∈∥=1E⟨x∣u(x)⟩=_{\|xx\in\|=1E}\langle x|u(x)\rangle = inf ι(u)=\iota (u) = infx∈E−{0}⟨x∣u(x)⟩∥x∥2_{x\in E-\{0\}}\frac{\langle x|u(x)\rangle}{\|x\|^2},

M(u)=M(u) = supx∈E⟨x∣u(x)⟩=_{x\in E}\langle x|u(x)\rangle = sup ι(u)=\iota (u) = supx∈E−{0}⟨x∣u(x)⟩∥x∥2_{x\in E-\{0\}}\frac{\langle x|u(x)\rangle}{\|x\|^2}.

∥x∥=1\|x\|=1

If E={0}E =\{0\}, one has M(u)=−∞,m(u)=+∞M(u) =-\infty ,m(u) = +\infty and ι(u)=∅\iota (u) =\emptyset.

Suppose EE nonzero; one then has m(u)⩽M(u)m(u)\leqslant M(u) and the numerical image of uu is an interval with endpoints m(u)m(u) and M(u)M(u). By Prop. 6, Sp(uu) is contained in the interval [m(u),M(u)][m(u),M(u)]. More precisely:

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
