Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 7. Spectre des endomorphismes des espaces de Banach

Let E1E_1 and E2E_2 be complex Hilbert spaces and let u∈L(E1;E2)u\in \mathscr{L}(E_1; E_2).

a) The initial subspace and the final subspace of ∣u∣|u| are both equal to the initial subspace of uu and one has ∥∣u∣∥=∥u∥\||u|\|=\|u\|;

b) There exists a unique partially isometric mapping jj of E1E_1 into E2E_2 such that Ker(jj) == Ker(uu) and u=j∣u∣u=j|u|;

c) The initial (resp. final) subspace of jj is equal to that of uu;

d) Let u1u_1 be a positive element of L(E1)\mathscr{L}(E_1) and j1j_1 a partially isometric element of L(E1;E2)\mathscr{L}(E_1; E_2) such that u=j1u1u=j_1u_1 and Ker(j1j_1) == Ker(u1u_1). Then u1=∣u∣u_1=|u| and j1=jj_1=j.

For every x∈E1x\in E_1, one has

∥u(x)∥2=⟨x∣(u∗u)(x)⟩=⟨x∣∣u∣2(x)⟩=∥∣u∣(x)∥2(2) \|u(x)\|^2=\langle x|(u^*u)(x)\rangle =\langle x||u|^2(x)\rangle =\||u|(x)\|^2 \tag{2}

This proves that Ker(uu) == Ker(∣u∣|u|) and ∥∣u∣∥=∥u∥\||u|\|=\|u\|. Since ∣u∣|u| is hermitian, the closure of the image of ∣u∣|u| is the orthogonal complement of its kernel (EVT, V, p. 41, prop. 4), that is to say the initial space of uu, whence a).

Formula (2) implies that there exists an isometric mapping vv of Im(∣u∣|u|) onto Im(uu) such that v(∣u∣(x))=u(x)v(|u|(x)) =u(x) for every x∈E1x\in E_1. Let jj be the unique element of L(E1;E2)\mathscr{L}(E_1; E_2) which extends vv and vanishes on Im(∣u∣|u|)∘=^{\circ}= Ker(∣u∣|u|) == Ker(uu). Then jj has the properties of b). The uniqueness of jj follows from the decomposition E = Ker(uu)⊕\oplus Im(∣u∣|u|).

The initial subspace of jj is Ker(jj)∘=^{\circ}= Ker(uu)∘^{\circ}, the initial space of uu. Its final subspace is jj(Ker(uu)∘^{\circ}) =j=j(Im(∣u∣|u|)) == Im(uu), the final subspace of uu. This proves c).

Let now u1u_1 and j1j_1 be as in d). We have u∗u=u1j1∗j1u1u^*u=u_1j_1^*j_1u_1. The mapping j1∗j1j_1^*j_1 is the orthogonal projector with kernel Ker(j1j_1) == Ker(u1u_1) (EVT, V, p. 41, prop. 5 (ii)) and hence with image Im(u1u_1). Therefore u∗u=u12u^*u=u^2_1 and hence u1=(u∗u)1/2=∣u∣(u_1= (u^*u)^{1/2}=|u|(I, p. 118, prop. 16). The uniqueness assertion of b) finally implies that j1=jj_1=j.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
