Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 7. Spectre des endomorphismes des espaces de Banach

Let E be a complex Hilbert space and uu an endomorphism of E. The following conditions are equivalent:

(i) The endomorphism uu is normal;

(ii) There exists a unitary element vv of L(E)\mathscr{L}(E), permutable with ∣u∣|u|, such that u=v∣u∣u=v|u|.

Let (j,∣u∣)(j,|u|) be the polar decomposition of uu. Suppose that uu is normal. Then ∣u∗∣=(uu∗)1/2=(u∗u)1/2=∣u∣|u^*|= (uu^*)^{1/2}= (u^*u)^{1/2}=|u|. Prop. 11 then implies ∣u∣j=∣u∗∣j=ju∗j=j∣u∣|u|j=|u^*|j=ju^*j=j|u|. Moreover, jj leaves stable the supplementary orthogonal subspaces Ker(∣u∣|u|) == Ker(jj) and Im(∣u∣|u|) == Im(jj) (prop. 10). Let vv be the element of L(E)\mathscr{L}(E) which coincides with jj on Ker(uu)∘^{\circ} and with the identity mapping on Ker(uu). Since jj induces an isometry of Ker(uu)∘^{\circ} onto Im(uu) == Ker(u∗u^*)∘=^{\circ}= Ker(uu)∘^{\circ} (since uu is normal), the endomorphism vv is unitary; moreover, it is permutable with ∣u∣|u|, since j∣u∣=∣u∣jj|u|=|u|j, and one has u=v∣u∣u=v|u|.

Conversely, let vv be a unitary element of L(E)\mathscr{L}(E), permutable with ∣u∣|u|, such that u=v∣u∣u=v|u|. One has uu∗=v∣u∣2v∗=∣u∣2vv∗=∣u∣2=u∗uuu^*=v|u|^2v^*=|u|^2vv^*=|u|^2=u^*u, therefore uu is normal.

Let E be a complex Hilbert space and u∈L(E)u\in \mathscr{L}(E). Let (j,∣u∣)(j,|u|) be the polar decomposition of uu. It may happen that jj commutes with ∣u∣|u| without uu being normal (Exercise 11 of I, p. 189).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
