Théories spectrales, chapter II, § 1. Transformation de Fourier

The space A(G) is a self-adjoint ideal of L1(G)L^1(G). It is contained in L1(G)∩L2(G)L^1(G)\cap L^2(G), and in the image of C(G)\mathscr{C}(G) in L1(G)L^1(G).

Let f∈L1(G)f\in L^1(G). For every g∈L2(G)g\in L^2(G), one has f∗g∈L1(G)f*g\in L^1(G) (INT, VIII, §4, no5^o5, prop. 12). Consequently, the space L1(G)∩L2(G)L^1(G)\cap L^2(G) is an ideal of L1(G)L^1(G), and the same is true of the space A(G). The ideal A(G) is self-adjoint.

Let ff and gg be in L2(G)L^2(G). The convolution product f∗gf*g is then the class of the continuous function given by

y↦∫Gf(yx−1)g(x)dx y\mapsto \int_Gf(yx^{-1})g(x)dx

(INT, VIII, §4, no5^o5, prop. 15). The second assertion follows.

Since χ(f∗g)=(χf)∗(χg)\chi (f*g) = (\chi f)*(\chi g) for χ∈G^,f∈L1(G)\chi \in \widehat{G},f\in L^1(G) and g∈L1(G)g\in L^1(G) (INT, VIII, §3, No.o1^o1, prop. 6), one has χh∈A(G)\chi h\in A(G) for every h∈A(G)h\in A(G) and χ∈G^\chi \in \widehat{G}. Since εx∗f=γ(x)f\varepsilon_x*f=\boldsymbol{\gamma }(x)f and the linear representation γ\boldsymbol{\gamma } is isometric on Lp(G)L^p(G) for every pp (INT, VIII, §2, No.o5^o5, prop. 8), one has εx∗f∈A(G)\varepsilon_x*f\in A(G) for all x∈Gx\in G and f∈A(G)f\in A(G).

We denote by A^(G)\widehat{A}(G) the image of A(G) under the Fourier transform. It is a subspace of C0(G^)\mathscr{C}_0(\widehat{G}).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
