Théories spectrales, chapter II, § 3. Sous-espaces invariants

The space of functions of L1(G)L^1(G) whose Fourier transform has compact support is dense in L1(G)L^1(G).

Since K(G^)\mathscr{K}(\widehat{G}) is dense in L2(G^)L^2(\widehat{G}) and the Fourier transform of L2(G)L^2(G) is an isometry onto L2(G^)L^2(\widehat{G}) (th. 1 of II, p. 215), the subspace V of L2(G)L^2(G) formed by the f∈L2(G)f\in L^2(G) such that FG(f)∈K(G^)\mathscr{F}_G(f)\in \mathscr{K}(\widehat{G}) is dense in L2(G)L^2(G).

Let g∈L1(G)g\in L^1(G). There exist g1,g2∈L2(G)g_1, g_2\in L^2(G) such that g=g1g2g=g_1g_2 (one may for example take g1=∣g∣1/2g_1=|g|^{1/2}, and g2(x)=0g_2(x) = 0 if g(x)=0,g2(x)=g(x) = 0,g_2(x) = g(x)/g1(x)g(x)/g_1(x) otherwise). It follows therefore from what precedes that gg is the limit of a sequence of functions of the form h1h2h_1h_2, where h1h_1 and h2h_2 belong to V. Now FG(h1h2)=FG(h1)∗FG(h2)\mathscr{F}_G(h_1h_2) =\mathscr{F}_G(h_1)*\mathscr{F}_G(h_2) (II, p. 223, prop. 14), and FG(h1)∗\mathscr{F}_G(h_1)* FG(h2)\mathscr{F}_G(h_2) belongs to K(G)\mathscr{K}(G). The lemma follows.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
