Théories spectrales, chapter II, § 3. Sous-espaces invariants

Let W be a weakly closed vector subspace of L∞(G)L^{\infty}(G), invariant under translation and nonzero. Then W contains at least one character of G.

We have seen that A(W)=V(W∘)A(W) = V(W^{\circ}). Since W≠0W\not= 0, we have W∘≠L1(G)W^{\circ}\not= L^1(G), and then V(W∘)V(W^{\circ}) is nonempty by th. 1 of II, p. 252.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
