Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 1. Opérateurs compacts sur un espace hilbertien
Let and be the family of its eigenvalues.
a) The following conditions are equivalent:
(i) One has ;
(ii) The endomorphism is compact ;
(iii) The family is summable in the Banach space
. Its sum is then equal to .
b) Suppose that is compact and denote by Λ the set of values of . The set of the such that is countable. If E is of infinite dimension, one has Sp and Sp() . If E is of finite dimension, then Sp Sp() .
By Lemma 1, one has sup for every finite subset J of I. It follows, by the Cauchy criterion, that the family is summable in if and only if the family tends to 0 at infinity, which implies that conditions (i) and (iii) are equivalent.
Condition (iii) implies that is compact (corollary of Proposition 2 of III, p. 4). Conversely, suppose that the endomorphism is compact. Since the family B is bounded in E, its image by in E is relatively compact in E (III, p. 2), and hence precompact. Let and J be a finite subset of I such that the image of B by is contained in the union of the balls of radius and centre for . Let - J. There exists such that , hence
Consequently, one has , that is, condition (i).
Finally, the spectrum of and its sensitive spectrum are calculated as functions of by using prop. 1, c) and Proposition 5 of III, p. 90.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
