Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 1. Opérateurs compacts sur un espace hilbertien
Suppose . Let be a compact and normal endomorphism of E. There exists an orthonormal basis B of E such that is diagonal in the basis B.
The set Sp is countable, and it does not contain 0 if E is of infinite dimension (III, p. 90, prop. 5, b)). For every element Sp, denote by the nullspace of . It is of finite dimension (loc. cit.) and, since is normal, it coincides with the eigenspace of relative to (EVT, V, p. 43, cor. of prop. 8). The spaces are pairwise orthogonal (I, p. 132, n).
Let F be the subspace of E Hilbert sum of the spaces for Sp. It is a space of countable type, stable under since each subspace is stable under . Since is also the eigenspace of corresponding to (EVT, V, loc. cit.), the endomorphism induces an endomorphism of by passing to subspaces. The endomorphism is compact (Proposition 3 of III, p. 5) and normal (Lemma 4 of I, p. 135). By construction, the point spectrum of is contained in (for, any eigenvector for would be one for , hence would belong to one of the spaces if the corresponding eigenvalue were non-zero). Thus the spectral radius of is zero, whence since is normal (Corollary 1 of I, p. 108). Hence Ker().
For every Sp, let be an orthonormal basis of and let be the family union of the ; it is an orthonormal basis of F. Let B be the union of and of an orthonormal basis of . It is an orthonormal basis of E and is diagonal in the basis B.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
