Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 1. Opérateurs compacts sur un espace hilbertien

Let n∈In\in I.

a) For every subspace F∈Fn+1F\in \mathscr{F}_{n+1} adapted to uu, one has λn(u)=rF(u)\lambda_n(u) =r_F(u);

b) For every subspace F∈FnF\in \mathscr{F}_n adapted to uu, one has λn(u)=RF(u)\lambda_n(u) = R_F(u).

Let F∈Fn+1F\in \mathscr{F}_{n+1} be a subspace adapted to uu, and (fi)0⩽i⩽n(f_i)_{0\leqslant i\leqslant n} an orthonormal basis of F such that u(fi)=λi(u)fiu(f_i) =\lambda_i(u)f_i for every ii. For every xx in F, one has

⟨x∣u(x)⟩=∑0⩽i⩽nλi(u)∣⟨fi∣x⟩∣2⩾λn(u)∑0⩽i⩽n∣⟨fi∣x⟩∣2=λn(u)∥x∥2 \langle x|u(x)\rangle =\sum_{0\leqslant i\leqslant n}\lambda_i(u)|\langle f_i|x\rangle |^2\geqslant \lambda_n(u)\sum_{0\leqslant i\leqslant n}|\langle f_i|x\rangle |^2=\lambda_n(u)\|x\|^2

with equality if x=fnx=f_n. This implies that rF(u)=λn(u)r_F(u) =\lambda_n(u), whence assertion a).

Let F∈FnF\in \mathscr{F}_n be a subspace adapted to uu. The closed subspace F∘F^{\circ} is nonzero (for n=n= dim(F) << dim(E)) and stable under uu; the endomorphism u~\widetilde{u} of F∘F^{\circ} deduced from uu by passing to subspaces is compact and positive.

One has Sp(u~\widetilde{u})⊂\subset Sp(uu). Moreover, one has Sp(u~\widetilde{u})⊂[0,λn(u)]\subset [0, \lambda_n(u)]. In fact, it is enough to verify that λ⩽λn(u)\lambda \leqslant \lambda_n(u) for every λ∈\lambda \in Sps(u~)_s(\widetilde{u}). The number λ\lambda is then an eigenvalue of uu, hence there exists j∈Ij\in I such that λ=λj(u)\lambda =\lambda_j(u). The eigenspace of uu relative to λj(u)\lambda_j(u) is therefore not contained in F, which implies that λj(u)⩽λn(u)\lambda_j(u)\leqslant \lambda_n(u).

Suppose that λn(u)>0\lambda_n(u)>0. Then the eigenspace of uu relative to λn(u)\lambda_n(u) is not contained in F, and therefore λn(u)\lambda_n(u) belongs to the point spectrum of u~\widetilde{u}. It follows that sup(Sp(u~\widetilde{u})) =λn(u)=\lambda_n(u). If λn(u)=0\lambda_n(u) = 0, one has the same result since the spectrum of u~\widetilde{u} is then reduced to {0}\{0\}.

Moreover, by definition one has RF(u)=R{0}(u~)R_F(u) = R_{\{0\}}(\widetilde{u}), and finally R{0}(u~)=R_{\{0\}}(\widetilde{u}) = sup(Sp(u~\widetilde{u})) by Prop. 9 of I, p. 139, a). Assertion b) is proved.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
