Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 1. Opérateurs compacts sur un espace hilbertien

Let F be a Hilbert space and let uu be a compact linear mapping of E into F.

For every integer n∈IEn\in I_E one denotes by αn(u)=λn(u∗∘u)\alpha_n(u) =\lambda_n(u^*\circ u). Let J be the set of n∈IEn\in I_E such that αn(u)>0\alpha_n(u)>0. The family (αn(u))n∈J(\alpha_n(u))_{n\in J} is called the sequence of singular values of uu repeated according to multiplicity.

One says that the sequence (αn(u))n∈IE(\alpha_n(u))_{n\in I_E} is the extended sequence of singular values of uu.

The sequence (αn(u))n∈IE(\alpha_n(u))_{n\in I_E} is well defined since the endomorphism u∗∘uu^*\circ u of E is compact (III, p. 5, prop. 3); it is a decreasing family of positive real numbers since u∗∘uu^*\circ u is positive.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
