Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 1. Opérateurs compacts sur un espace hilbertien

Let F be a Hilbert space and let uu be a compact linear mapping of E into F.

a) For n∈IEn\in I_E, one has

αn(u)=\alpha_n(u) = supF∈Fn+1_{F\in\mathscr{F}_{n+1}} infx∈F−{0}∥u(x)∥∥x∥=_{x\in F-\{0\}}\frac{\|u(x)\|}{\|x\|}= infF∈Fn_{F\in\mathscr{F}_n} supx∈F∘−{0}∥u(x)∥∥x∥_{x\in F^{\circ-}\{0\}}\frac{\|u(x)\|}{\|x\|}.

b) Let J be the set of n∈IEn\in I_E such that αn(u)≠0\alpha_n(u)\not = 0. There exist orthonormal families (en)n∈J(e_n)_{n\in J} in E and (fn)n∈J(f_n)_{n\in J} in F such that for every x∈Ex\in E, one has

u(x)=∑n∈Jαn(u)⟨en∣x⟩fn u(x) =\sum_{n\in J}\alpha_n(u)\langle e_n|x\rangle f_n

Since ⟨x∣u∗u(x)⟩=∥u(x)∥2\langle x|u^*u(x)\rangle =\|u(x)\|^2 for every x∈Ex\in E, the definitions and prop. 6 of IV, p. 154, a), imply the equality of the first assertion.

Let (en)n∈IE(e_n)_{n\in I_E} be an orthonormal family of E satisfying the conclusions of prop. 3 of IV, p. 152 applied to the positive compact endomorphism u∗∘uu^*\circ u of E. Put fn=αn−1u(en)f_n=\alpha^{-1}_nu(e_n) for n∈Jn\in J. By reasoning as in the proof of corollary 2 of IV, p. 150, one obtains assertion c).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
