Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 1. Opérateurs compacts sur un espace hilbertien

Let (fn)n∈N(f_n)_{n\in\mathbf{N}} be a sequence of measurable mappings of X into a metrisable space F. Suppose that the limit of fn(x)f_n(x) exists in the complement of a μ\mu-negligible subset of X. There exists a sequence (Cm)m∈N(C_m)_{m\in\mathbf{N}} of compact subsets of X whose union X~\widetilde{X} satisfies ∣μ∣(X−X~)=0|\mu|(X-\widetilde{X}) = 0, such that the functions fnf_n are continuous on CmC_m for all n∈Nn\in \mathbf{N} and all m∈Nm\in \mathbf{N}, and the sequence (fn)n∈N(f_n)_{n\in\mathbf{N}} converges uniformly to ff on CmC_m for all m∈Nm\in \mathbf{N}.

It follows from theorem 2 of INT, IV, p. 175, § 5, no4^o4 and proposition 12, b) of INT, IV, p. 188, § 5, no8^o8, that the set of compact subsets C of X such that the functions fnf_n are continuous on C for all nn, and that (fn)(f_n) converges uniformly to ff on C, is μ\mu-dense in X (INT, IV, p. 189, § 5, no8^o8, definition 6). The assertion then follows from the remark in INT, IV, p. 189, §5, no8^o8.

Let N be a function belonging to L2(X×X)\mathscr{L}^2(X\times X) and let uNu_N be the Hilbert-Schmidt mapping of L2(X)L^2(X) into L2(X)L^2(X) with kernel N (proposition 19 of IV, p. 173). Since the mapping uNu_N is compact, there exist by proposition 9 of IV, p. 156 an element M of N\mathbf{N} and, denoting by I the set of integers n∈Nn\in \mathbf{N} such that n⩽Mn\leqslant M, orthonormal families (fi)i∈I(f_i)_{i\in I} and (gi)i∈I(g_i)_{i\in I} in L2(X)\mathscr{L}^2(X) and a family (αi)i∈I(\alpha_i)_{i\in I} in R+∗\mathbf{R}^*_+ such that

uN(f)=∑i∈Iαi⟨f~i∣f⟩g~i(13) u_N(f) =\sum_{i\in I}\alpha_i\langle \widetilde{f}_i|f\rangle \widetilde{g}_i \tag{13}

for all f∈L2f\in L^2(X), where the series converges in L2(X)L^2(X).

For each i∈Ii\in I, let hi∈L2(X×X)h_i\in \mathscr{L}^2(X\times X) denote the function defined by hi(x,y)=fi(x)gi(y)h_i(x, y) =f_i(x)g_i(y), so that h~i\widetilde{h}_i is the class of fi⊗gif_i\otimes g_i. By remark 9 of IV, p. 173, the series with general term αihi\alpha_ih_i converges to N in L2(X×X)L^2(X\times X).

In the remainder of this number, we suppose that N is a continuous function.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
